In the previous article we briefly looked at the problems, issues and limitations of the IDDSI Syringe Test.

Until now, the IDDSI Flow Test relied on syringes. But the correct syringes were required and they weren’t readily-available to every user in every setting.

That’s why IDDSI have produced their own Funnel designed by IDDSI specifically to perform the IDDSI flow test to check that thickened drinks adhere to the prescribed level of thickness on the IDDSI Framework.

Compared to syringes, the IDDSI Funnel:

    • has the correct dimensions required to perform the IDDSI flow test accurately
    • has the IDDSI drink thickness levels marked on the barrel
    • has a wider spout making it easier to load the drink to be tested
    • is more eco-friendly with no wastage of a plunger and is reusable and recyclable
    • is dishwasher-safe

Whilst the IDDSI Funnel is an approvement on the syringes, many of the problems, issues and limitations of the IDDSI Flow Test described in the previous article remain:

    • using the IDDSI funnel instead of the syringe still requires a level of dexterity that some users may not have
    • slight errors in the volume of drink being tested can lead to an inaccurate result
    • slight errors in timing the 10 seconds can lead to an inaccurate result
    • it is still quite “fiddly” and is unlikely to be used to test each and every drink
    • there is still a risk of scalding when testing hot drinks
    • each test wastes 10ml of the drink

That’s why Viscgo developed the Drink Thickness Test Sticks. In the next article, we summarize studies that evidence the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of the Viscgo Sticks and you can see our full range of quick, easy, practical drink thickness test products at our online shop.
